"Feeding the Territory": A Citizen Science Approach to the Research and Revitalization of Landraces

Abstract

Landraces are essential plant genetic resources for food security and for addressing the challenges posed by climate change. The scientific community and international organizations such as FAO highlight the need to conserve these varieties and promote their sustainable use to strengthen the resilience of agroecosystems. “Alimentando Territorio” is a project that integrates scientific and educational objectives. Scientifically, it aims to expand and communicate agronomic and sensory knowledge of 12 traditional varieties from the Sierra of Madrid, together with their associated ecological knowledge, to support their recovery, conservation, and incorporation into agri‑food systems.

The project was implemented in 2023 across 13 schools in the Madrid region, involving 806 students through a school-based citizen science initiative. The educational methodology is grounded in project-based learning and incorporates inquiry-based and game-based strategies to enhance students’ scientific competencies and awareness of agrobiodiversity. Student-led research included 48 agronomic trials, 878 sensory evaluations, 16 innovative culinary preparations, and 31 knowledge‑transfer actions.

The data generated provide relevant information for integrating these varieties into professional gardens and kitchens, including productivity, sensory profiles, and consumer acceptance. Educational outcomes were assessed across 6 key dimensions, yielding higher-quality indicators than comparable initiatives. Additionally, dissemination and transfer activities have improved agronomic knowledge and enhanced the value of these varieties as food resources.
