Open call for contributions to a monograph on remote sensing
Posted on 2026-09-21This special issue aims to offer an up-to-date and diverse view of remote sensing applied to ecology, covering different methodologies, spatial and temporal scales, sensor types and observation systems. We want to move beyond studies focused solely on vegetation, broadening the scope to other ecological components, methods and processes across a range of environmental contexts.
Specifically, it seeks to:
- Showcase the methodological and technological diversity used to assess ecosystem processes and functional state.
- Foster cross-disciplinary work and scientific exchange across disciplines and scales.
- Highlight innovative applications across ecological fields, showing that remote sensing goes far beyond greenness.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- New sensors and platforms (satellites, UAVs/drones, proximal sensors, LiDAR, radar, hyperspectral).
- Multiscale integration: from in situ sensors to global satellite observation.
- Analysis of long time series and ecological change dynamics.
- Applications in terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems.
- Monitoring of biodiversity, ecosystem structure and function.
- Assessment of and response to disturbances (fires, droughts, pests, climate change).
- Ecological modelling and remote sensing data assimilation.
- Data fusion and hybrid approaches (remote sensing + field data).
- The role of artificial intelligence and machine learning in spatial ecology.
- Applications in ecosystem management, conservation and restoration.
