Antarctica is a valuable scenario for scientific research in different fields, including studies on ecosystems, biodiversity and life adaptation to the existing particular environmental conditions. Last years there has been a development of projects related to the study of climate change, its local effects and connection to global processes. The International Polar Year 2007-2008 has produced a development of the Antarctic research and opened new perspectives. In this paper the importance of the international cooperation and the role of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) are pointed out. The Spanish contribution and a series of possibly key themes and research fields for the coming years are also commented.
